Behind the Wheel Requirements for California Teen Drivers

If you're a teen in California looking to get your driver's license, you'll need to complete behind-the-wheel (BTW) training. Here's everything you need to know about the requirements.

The 6-Hour Professional Training Requirement

California law requires all teen drivers (under 18) to complete a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a DMV-licensed professional driving instructor. This is non-negotiable — you cannot substitute parent-supervised driving for this requirement.

Key Details:

  • Must be completed with a DMV-licensed driving school
  • Typically done in 3 sessions of 2 hours each
  • Must have a valid learner's permit before starting
  • Your instructor will provide a certificate upon completion
  • This certificate is required to take the DMV road test

The 50-Hour Practice Requirement

In addition to professional training, California requires teens to complete 50 hours of supervised practice driving with a parent, guardian, or licensed adult (25+). At least 10 of those hours must be at night.

This practice should cover a variety of conditions: highways, residential streets, parking lots, different weather, day and night driving. The more diverse your practice, the better prepared you'll be for the road test and real-world driving.

Age Requirements

Age 15: Can begin driver's education (online or classroom)

Age 15.5: Can get a learner's permit and begin behind-the-wheel training

Age 16: Can take the DMV road test (after holding permit for 6 months and completing all requirements)

What's Covered in Professional BTW Training

During your 6 hours of professional instruction, a certified instructor will cover:

  • Vehicle controls and pre-driving checks
  • Residential and neighborhood driving
  • Turns, lane changes, and intersections
  • Highway and freeway driving
  • Parking (parallel, perpendicular, and angled)
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Navigating school zones and pedestrian areas
  • Night driving basics
  • DMV road test preparation
