California Senior Driver License Renewal Guide (70+)

Renewing your license after 70 doesn't have to be stressful. California has recently simplified the process, and this guide covers exactly what to expect — including the new rules that took effect in October 2024.

Key Renewal Rules for Drivers 70+

  • In-person renewal required — you must visit a DMV office (no online or mail renewal)
  • 5-year renewal cycle — your license expires every 5 years (same as younger drivers)
  • Vision test every renewal — the DMV tests your eyesight at each visit
  • No automatic driving test — a behind-the-wheel test is only required if there are concerns on your record

What Changed in October 2024 (AB 2687)

Big news for seniors: AB 2687 eliminated the mandatory knowledge test for senior license renewals if you have a clean driving record. This applies to all renewals starting October 1, 2024.

Here's what this means for you:

  • If your record is clean (no at-fault accidents, no DUI, no points), you likely won't need to take a knowledge test
  • If the DMV does require a knowledge test, you now have an eLearning option — you can complete an online course instead of taking the traditional written test
  • The vision test is still required at every renewal — that hasn't changed

The Vision Test

Every renewal includes a vision screening at the DMV. Here's what you need to know:

The Standard

You need 20/40 vision in your best eye, with or without glasses or contacts. This is the same standard for all drivers, not just seniors.

What If You Don't Pass?

The DMV will give you a Report of Vision Examination (DL 62) form to take to your eye doctor. Your doctor fills it out, and you return it to the DMV. If your corrected vision meets the standard, your license is issued. If not, the DMV may issue a restricted license (daytime only, for example).

Tip: See Your Eye Doctor First

Get an eye exam before your DMV visit. Update your glasses or contacts if needed. This avoids a second trip to the DMV.

When a Knowledge Test Is Required

Most seniors won't need a knowledge test under the new rules. However, the DMV may still require one if:

  • You have at-fault accidents or traffic violations on your record
  • Your license has been expired for more than a year
  • There are medical concerns flagged by a physician or family member

If required, the traditional written test has 18 questions (you need 15 correct). It's available in over 35 languages. But you can also choose the new eLearning option to complete it online at your own pace.

What to Bring to Your Renewal

  • Your current driver's license (even if expired)
  • Glasses or contacts (if you wear them for driving)
  • Payment for the renewal fee ($41 for standard, $37 for REAL ID renewal)
  • If upgrading to REAL ID: proof of identity, Social Security number, and 2 proofs of CA residency
  • Completed DL 62 vision form (if your eye doctor filled one out)

Tips for a Smooth Renewal

  1. Make an appointment.

Don't walk in. DMV appointments are available at dmv.ca.gov and will save you hours of waiting.

  2. Visit your eye doctor beforehand.

Update your prescription if needed so you pass the vision test on the first try.

  3. Review the California Driver Handbook.

Even if a knowledge test isn't likely, brushing up on current rules can't hurt — especially rules about roundabouts, bike lanes, and school zones that may have changed since you last studied.

  4. Renew early.

You can renew up to 6 months before your license expires. Don't wait until the last minute.

  5. Bring a family member if it helps.

Someone to drive you, help navigate the DMV building, or just provide moral support.

When a Driving Test May Be Required

A behind-the-wheel driving test is not part of a standard renewal. The DMV may require one only if:

  • Law enforcement submits a report about your driving
  • A physician reports a medical condition that may affect driving
  • A family member submits a Request for Reexamination
  • You have multiple at-fault accidents on your record
