One of the most common questions we get at SOC Driving School is "how many lessons will I need?" The answer depends on your age, experience, and comfort level.
California's Minimum Requirements
Teens (Under 18)
6 hours
of professional behind-the-wheel training (required by law)
+ 50 hours of supervised practice with a parent/guardian
Adults (18+)
0 hours
required by law (but strongly recommended)
Most adults benefit from 2-6 hours of professional instruction
How Many Lessons Do Most Students Actually Need?
Based on our 18+ years of experience teaching over 15,000 students at SOC Driving School:
Complete beginner (never driven)
6-10 hours of professional lessons + extensive parent-supervised practice. Start with our 6-hour teen package or adult 2-hour sessions.
Some experience (practiced with parents)
4-6 hours of professional lessons to refine skills and fix bad habits. Our standard teen program (6 hours) is perfect.
Experienced but need DMV prep
2-4 hours to polish skills and learn what the DMV specifically tests. Our DMV Test Prep ($195) is designed for this.
