How to Get Your Driver's License in California

Whether you're a teenager getting your first license or an adult new to California, this guide walks you through every step of the process.

For Teens (Under 18)

California has a Graduated Driver License (GDL) program for teens. Here's the step-by-step process:

  1. Step 1: Complete Driver's Education

If you're under 17.5, you must complete a DMV-approved driver's education course. This can be done online or in a classroom. SOC offers an online driver's ed course for just $30 (or free when bundled with behind-the-wheel lessons).

  2. Step 2: Get Your Learner's Permit (Age 15.5+)

Visit any California DMV office with your driver's ed certificate, proof of identity, and social security number. You'll take a written knowledge test (46 questions, need 38 correct). Your parent or guardian must sign the application.

  3. Step 3: Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training

California requires a minimum of 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training with a DMV-licensed instructor. You also need 50 hours of supervised practice with a parent or guardian (10 hours at night). SOC's Teen BTW program covers all 6 required hours.

  4. Step 4: Hold Your Permit for 6 Months

You must hold your learner's permit for at least 6 months before taking the road test. Use this time to practice!

  5. Step 5: Pass the DMV Road Test (Age 16+)

Schedule your road test at a nearby DMV. You'll need to demonstrate safe driving skills including turns, lane changes, stopping, and parking. SOC's DMV Test Prep package ($195) includes practice and our car for the exam.

For Adults (18+)

The process is simpler for adults, but you still need to be prepared:

  1. Step 1: Visit the DMV

Bring proof of identity, residency, and social security number. Fill out the application and pay the fee.

  2. Step 2: Pass the Written Test

The written test has 36 questions (need 30 correct for adults). Study the California Driver Handbook.

  3. Step 3: Practice Driving

While adults aren't required to take professional lessons, we highly recommend them. Our adult driving lessons start at $170 and dramatically improve your chances of passing.

  4. Step 4: Pass the Road Test

Schedule and pass the behind-the-wheel driving test at any California DMV.

Tips for Passing Your California Driving Test

  • Always check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes
  • Come to a complete stop at stop signs (count to 3)
  • Signal at least 100 feet before turning
  • Keep both hands on the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock
  • Maintain a safe following distance (3-4 seconds)
  • Obey the speed limit — going too slow is also a deduction
