Teen Behind the Wheel Training

6 Hours of Professional Driving Instruction in Orange County

California's 6-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Requirement

California law requires every teen driver under the age of 18 to complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction with a DMV-licensed driving school before they can take the road test. This isn't optional — it's a state-mandated requirement under California Vehicle Code Section 12814.6.

In addition to these 6 professional hours, California also requires teens to log 50 hours of supervised practice driving with a parent or guardian (including 10 hours at night). SOC Driving School covers the professional instruction portion, giving your teen a strong foundation of skills and confidence before they begin practicing with you.

Think of it this way: our certified instructors teach the techniques and safety fundamentals, and then your teen reinforces those skills through practice with family. Together, these two components prepare your teen to pass the DMV road test and become a safe, responsible driver.

What Your Teen Will Learn

Our behind-the-wheel curriculum is designed to build your teen's driving skills progressively — starting with the basics and advancing to more complex road situations. By the end of their 6 hours, your teen will have practiced every maneuver the DMV examiner tests during the road test.

  • Pre-drive safety checks and vehicle familiarization
  • Residential street driving and neighborhood navigation
  • Right turns, left turns, and protected/unprotected intersections
  • Smooth and safe lane changes with mirror and blind-spot checks
  • Freeway driving basics — merging, lane positioning, and exiting
  • Parking techniques: parallel, perpendicular, and angle parking
  • Uphill and downhill parking with curb awareness
  • Navigating complex intersections and traffic signals
  • Defensive driving strategies and hazard recognition
  • Night driving awareness and low-visibility techniques
  • Speed management and following distance
  • Sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists, and large vehicles

Each lesson builds on the previous one, so your teen isn't just memorizing steps — they're developing real driving instincts that will keep them safe for years to come.

How Lessons Work

We make scheduling and logistics as easy as possible for busy Orange County families. Here's what to expect:

Flexible Scheduling

The 6 hours are typically split into three 2-hour sessions, but we can accommodate other arrangements. Lessons are available 7 days a week, 8 AM to 6 PM, so we can work around school, sports, and family schedules.

Free Pick-Up & Drop-Off

Our instructor picks your teen up from home, school, or another convenient location — and drops them off after the lesson. No need to rearrange your day or drive to a classroom.

Dual-Control Vehicles

Every training vehicle is equipped with a secondary brake pedal on the instructor's side. If a situation arises, your instructor can intervene instantly. Safety is never compromised.

One-on-One Instruction

Your teen is the only student in the car during their lesson. This means 100% of the instruction time is focused on your teen's specific needs, questions, and skill development.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can my teen start behind-the-wheel training?
Your teen can begin BTW training after receiving their learner's permit from the DMV. In California, teens can get a permit as early as 15 and a half years old after completing driver's education and passing the written permit test. Once they have their permit in hand, they can start lessons with us right away.
How are the 6 hours of training scheduled?
The 6 hours are typically divided into three 2-hour sessions, but we offer flexible scheduling. Some families prefer two 3-hour sessions or other arrangements. We work around your teen's school schedule, extracurricular activities, and your family's availability. Lessons are available 7 days a week, 8 AM to 6 PM.
Do you pick up and drop off from school?
Yes! We pick up and drop off from home, school, or another convenient location within our service area across Orange County. Many of our teen students schedule lessons right after school — our instructor meets them at the school campus and drives them home after the lesson.
What vehicles do your instructors use?
All of our training vehicles are equipped with dual controls (an instructor brake pedal on the passenger side), ensuring maximum safety during lessons. Our vehicles are well-maintained, fully insured, and clearly marked as student driver vehicles. Your teen will learn on a modern, reliable car that's similar to what they'll encounter on the road.
What if my teen is nervous about driving?
Many of our students start out feeling anxious — that's completely normal! Our instructors are specifically trained to work with nervous drivers. We start in low-traffic areas and gradually build up to more challenging environments as your teen gains confidence. We never rush a student. Patient, encouraging instruction is what SOC is known for, and our 98% pass rate reflects that approach.
